Texas Sheet Cake

My mom has made this cake since I was a little girl and I just love it. I figured it was about time I learn to make it and share it with you.  This cake is great to serve to a crowd or take to a party.  Cut  into equal squares and place in a muffin cup for a nice presentation and single servings.  Guaranteed to satisfy those chocolate cravings!

Ingredients

Cake:

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 – 1 oz. squares of bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 pint sour cream
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Frosting:

  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 – 1 oz. squares of bittersweet chocolate
  • 6 tbsp. milk
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

Cake:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 400°.
  2. In a large saucepan boil 2 sticks butter, 1 cup water, and 2 squares bittersweet chocolate.Texas Sheet Cake - boiling
  3. Boil for 2 minutes and remove from heat.
  4. Add boiling mixture to flour, sugar, and salt.
  5. Mix well then add 2 eggs, sour cream, and baking soda.
  6. Pour into a greased and floured 11 x 15 cake pan.Texas Sheet Cake Batter
  7. Bake at 400° for 20-22-minutes.

Frosting:

  1. In a saucepan bring to a boil 1 stick butter, 6 tbsp. milk, and 2 squares of bittersweet chocolate.
  2. Boil for 1 minute.Texas Sheet Cake Icing
  3. Remove from heat and add to 4 cups confectioners sugar, vanilla, and chopped nuts. Mix well.
